Abstract

The physical and chemical properties of materials occurring within the core of a liquid sodium cooled fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) are reviewed. Properties particularly relevant to predicting the reactor's behaviour, either under various accident scenarios or during normal operations, are considered. Recommendations are put forward in a form suitable for use in computer codes which model such situations. Included in the review are the following properties: (a) Oxide fuels: density and thermal expansion, temperature of fusion, enthalpy and specific heat, vapour pressure, viscosity, diffusion and creep, emissivity, thermal conductivity, surface tension and energy. (b) AISI M316 stainless steel: composition, thermal expansion, temperature of fusion, enthalpy and specific heat, thermal conductivity, vapour pressure, viscosity. (c) Sodium: density, enthalpy and specific heat, vapour pressure, emissivity, diffusion, thermal conductivity, surface tension, viscosity, equation of state, critical constants.
