Abstract

This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar held in Brussels in April 1987, entitled "Technical and economic modelling of livestock production systems and strategies", as a coordinated activity of the CEC Agricultural Research Programme. After a discussion of general aspects of modelling and its application in livestock production, papers were presented on animal models (relating growth and lactation to nutrition), herd models (including herd management, animal health and grassland utilisation) and population sector models (particularly breeding programmes). Researchers of different disciplines, working with different species, discussed their experiences with regard to techniques, the impact of modelling as a research tool, the interpretation of results and needs for further research.
