Abstract

This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar "Stunning of Animals for Slaughter", held in Zeist, The Netherlands, on October 13 - 15, 1982, under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities. As part of the work of the Division for the Coordination of Agricultural Research, this meeting was organized in the framework of the animal welfare activities. The seminar was intended to bring together available experience on the stunning of a large variety of farm animals, to examine the knowledge available on their physiology and behaviour immediately before, during or after various methods of stunning, to consider their significance in relation to animal welfare and other aspects, to discuss how current stunning methods could be technically improved and to identify key problems which need further investigation. The collection of assembled papers and discussions thus represents one of the most extensive reviews of the subject that has been attempted.
