SPOT SIMULATION DATA FOR THE SEGOU (MALI) RICE PERIMETER
A preliminary analysis of SPOT simulation data indicates that the criteria for their operationality under controlled submersion conditions of the West Africa "rice perimeters" are satisfactorily fullfilled. On the other hand, a test of automatic classification has put into evidence two major impediments constituted by the quasi-mono-dimesionality of the spectral information (due to the strong correlation between bands) and by the spectral heterogeneity of the categories to be classified. At the present stage of the research, the visual analysis appears thus to be the most adequate for integrating the information provided by ground survey and by photographic documents with that provided by the radiometric documents, in view of a fine classification of the categories concerned by the inventory. This conclusion appears of particular interest for applications of remote sensing to problems of developing countries.
