Abstract

The range of subjects covered is broad, as shown by examples of reference materials currently available from BCR (e.g. coal, ores, fertiliser, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particulates, etc.) The growth of legislation governing food materials (human and animal) in Europe during the past 10 years and the increasing need to demonstrate accuracy through GLP and accreditation schemes has given rise to urgent needs for suitable reference materials. The BCR has undertaken a systematic scheme in this area with two aims: a. to encourage awareness for the needs for accurate measurements in European laboratories through a series of collaborative exercises, and b. to prepare reference materials covering a broad range of analytical requirements. Each reference material project is run in collaboration with a group of 10 - 15 specialists, who define the needs and carry out the measurements. Independent analytical methods are used to confirm certified values.
