Abstract

Area surveillance in controlled and supervised areas of nuclear installations is one objective of radiation protection in order to make sure that radiation working levels are not surpassed and in order to reveal unexpected radiation. For this surveillance many types of instruments are available commercially, the selection of which depends on the control task and the measuring problem encountered. These instruments are described in this paper for external radiation control, separated according to fixed or mains operated and portable or battery operated instruments, for the control of surface contamination and for the control of radioactivity releases into the atmosphere. The description concludes with some remarks on the centralization of area control data.
