SYMPOSIUM ON FRUIT CULTIVARS IN WESTERN EUROPE
This volume records the presented papers and the ensuing discussions at a meeting held at Angers, France on 23rd and 24th June 1982 which was organized by the Expert Group on Fruit within the Directorate-General for Agriculture (DG VI) of the European Economic Commission. The organizational relationships of this group within the European Economic Commission are dealt with in the introductory paper. The proceedings fell into two related parts, the first being a seminar concerned with the need for the conservation and evaluation of fruit genetic resources in various European countries, while the second was essentially a workshop in which the organizational aspects of such work within Europe and the United States of America were discussed. In the papers which constitute the workshop session, Dr. Watkins presents in detail the proposals for coordinating the activities of fruit gene banks in Europe which the E.E.C. Fruit Group has engendered. He rightly stresses the need for this activity to be seen in an international context. The need for official support for genetic resources work in a national programme has been clearly perceived by the government of the U.S.A.
