KONSTRUKTION EINER ELEKTROLYSEZELLE ZUR ANODISCHEN OXIDATION VON SCHWEFELDIOXID UND KATHODISCHEN ERZEUGUNG VON WASSERSTOFF
In view of the construction of a pilot plant for the sulphuric acid hybrid process incorporating the CRISTINA sulphuric acid splitting method (JRC Ispra) and the electrolytic step for anodic SO-2 oxidation with the homogeneous catalyst HI (KFA) the scaling up of the electrolytic cell was continued. Based on previous work on an electrolytic cell with 125 cm**2 single electrode area a bipolar electrolytic cell with an electrode area of 0.1 m**2 was designed. With 120 units divided ito 4 sections 10 Nm**3 H-2/h are to be produced at a current density of about 2 kA/m**2. The cell unit is a three-compartment unit, the intermediate electrolyte preventing SO-2 migration to the cathode. In order to achieve a symmetrical electrolyte flow through the cell compartments a rectangular form of the cell was chosen. Electrode materials are porous graphite for the anode and tungsten carbide coated graphite for the cathode, thus avoiding noble metals as catalysts. Other cell materials are: NEOSEPTA C66-5T for the separators, PVDF for the cell frame and VITON for the gaskets. Further materials are steel and copper. The estimated price for 4 prototype cells with 30 units each is about 65,000 DM for the material and very approximately 65,000 for the construction.
