Abstract

This report concerning "flat glass for building" is divided into two major parts: (i) theoretical analysis exploring the various aspects concerning glass utilization; (ii) technical annexes which are virtually standards. The theoretical analysis is further divided into two parts. The first concerning product quality and the second relating to the product performance in relation to energy, comfort and safety. The technical annexes are also divided into two parts concerning the products and their functions. The products examined are the following: 1. base glass products, 2. insulating glass, 3. toughened glass, 4. laminated glass, 5. coated glass. This report examines the following glass functions: 1. thermal insulation, 2. light transmission and energy properties, 3. safety, 4. acoustic. This report was drawn up with the two aims of knowing the available glass products and their major possibilities for energy saving, comfort and safety, and outlining a European proposal for their definitions and quality control.
