Abstract

This is a review of the main results of both the R & D and the demonstration projects which are at a more advanced stage ; supported by the CEC (Dir. Gen. XII and XVIII of the Commission of the European Communities) since 1 July, 1975. These projects, which were illustrated and discussed at the Brussels (December 1977) and Strasbourg (March 1980) seminars, have concentrated on selected test areas, namely the Rhine Graben (Rhine Rift Valley), Massif Central, Naples region, etc. For their implementation it has been necessary to develop suitable prospecting and study technologies and to integrate the various methods of investigation. Also, in the light of the results obtained, we have attempted to provide the projects with defined exploration targets for which we have tried to assess the real prospects. In particular, some geological environments of differing geothermal interest have been identified; these are: crystalline massifs, intracratonic basins, for deep basins, marginal basins, continental rifts, fissural basic volcanism, anatectic magmatism and central volcanoes with highly evolved products. The methodological approach has been now completed. It is our wish that further exploration should aim at defined and integrated projects and concrete industrial ventures.
