Abstract

This volume presents the proceedings of a meeting which concluded the Commission's four year biomass programme and gave an opportunity to pool results and achievements. There was a reasonable balance in the programme between "energy cropping" and biomass conversion and utilisation. In a number of European countries interesting new results have been obtained on productivity, yields and biomass production costs for energy forestry and other energy crops such as Arundo donax or algae. On the utilisation side, R&D work on straw burners has come to an end because this area has become by and large commercial. Gasification and in particular the production of synthesis gas from wood also shows excellent prospects for future implementation. For the first time CO and H-2 ready for conversion into methanol were produced from several pilot plants. Remarkable results were also obtained on biogas and fermentation in general. As shown n a special investigation of this programme, biogas is becoming increasingly successful on the market
