Résumé

The geothermal drilling in Saint-Ghislain (Belgium) produces an artesian flow of about 100 m**3/h with a temperature of 74 degrees C. The producing formation is the Karst of the Upper Visian at 2400-2630 meters. A similar drilling in the same area (Douvrain) produces from 1354 m water at 67 degrees C. A study of the French - Belgian geothermal region from Saint-Ghislain to Saint-Amand-les-Eaux has been executed within the framework of contract 573-78-EGF. The present work concentrates on the regional hydrogeological context and in particular on the French sector of the geothermal area. Many data have been found for the region Roubaix-Tourcoing. This is not the case for the coal basin where the different drillings only occasionally reach the top of the Carboniferous limestones. The hydraulic behaviour of the region Roubaix-Tourcoing is fundamentally different from that of the region Saint-Amand-les-Eaux because of the faulted anticline structure of Seclin that prevents all hydraulic continuity between the limestone formation that it separates.
