SVILUPPO DI GHISA BAINITICA NELLA COSTRUZIONE DI INGRANAGGI PER L'INDUSTRIA AUTOMOBILISTICA
One potential application of alternative materials for the manufacturing of automotive components is the utilization of spheroidal cast iron for vehicle power line components where high specific pressures and flexural load stresses are involved. This final report is intended to analyze the industrial feasibility and possible problems connected with the use of spheroidal cast iron for gear applications (bevel gears for a rear drive differential) in replacement carbonitrided 18 CrMo 4 steel. In order to grant mechanical and dynamic characteristics similar to steel, to spheroidal cast iron bevel gears, it was necessary to treat the machined parts with ferritization, austempering and shot peening processes. The use of spheroidal cast iron resulted in a 75% saving on tool costs during the machining stage. However, considerable problems arose concerning deformations of the finished parts, with scraps amounting to about 50% of total production. The survey has made it clear that if cast iron is to be used for gear applications, further efforts are needed to align both the heat treatment and machining cycles with the characteristics of the new material.
