As a result of these discussions, this meeting considers that the outline programme listed below is a necessary approach. The expertise to carry it out exists now within the Communities as do plans for its initiation. (I)* Detection by natural attractant substances (kairomones and pheromones). (II)* Biotechnical control. (Bee management techniques). (III)* Life history, reproduction and development of Varroa. (IV) Biological control by natural enemies and pathogenic microorganisms. (V)* Artificial rearing techniques for Varroa mites. (VI) Experimental taxonomy of Varroa jacobsoni and related species. (VII) Determination of resistance to acaricides by Varroa. (VIII) Comparative studies of the relationship between enzyme systems of host and parasite. (IX)* Varroa as a vector of honey bee pathogens. (X) Search and selection for resistant and tolerant honey bee genotypes. *Of highest priority, as indicated by the participants. In addition to research proposals the meeting believes that a standardization of regulations and legislations remains necessary for the control and containment of Varroa.
