Abstract

The ESTI program comprises three actions: (1) monitoring and data evaluation, (2) on-site array acceptance tests and (3) qualification testing of modules. The third point is covered in this paper which presents the results of up to now 2000 single tests on about 200 modules, summed up in 30 photovoltaic test reports covering the various module types. The qualification tests include electrical performance, thermal, mechanical, chemical and hot spot tests according to EUR Specifications 101 and 501. Comparisons are made of module (and cell) performances, typical defects are described, in addition measuring problems are discussed. One of the main results of this work was to establish the utility and effectiveness of a supranational testing centre to verify experimentally the achievements of photovoltaic performance objectives. In particular a contribution has been made to improve the technology of photovoltaic modules by correcting defects during the prototype phase.
