INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS OF URANIUM AND PLUTONIUM WITH TIN
Alloys of uranium and plutonium with tin were prepared by arc melting and the phases were identified by electron microprobe analysis. Compounds of the U - Sn and Pu - Sn binary systems were observed and tentatively identified as U-3Sn-7, USn-2, U-4Sn-5, USn, Pu-3Sn-7, PuSn.Msn-3, M-3Sn-7, M-4Sn-5, MSn, M-5Sn-4 and M-5Sn-3 (M = U-xPu-1-x) were identified in the ternary system. The melting temperatures and lattice parameters of MSn-3 vary linearly with the uranium to plutonium mass ratio. A comparison with isotypic compounds of the U - Pb and Pu - Pb systems is made.
