Abstract

For several years the Educational and Training Organization of the Commission of the European Communities, Ispra Establishment, has been engaged in the organization of courses in the field of protection against ionizing radiations. Among these courses one was dedicated exclusively to radiation detection, measurement and dosimetry by means of thermoluminescence (TL) methods and the applications of these techniques in various fields such as personnel and environmental dosimetry, in neutron dosimetry, in medicine and biology, in reactor engineering, for age determinations (dating) and in the field of dose intercomparisons. The course material of the first two courses from November 14-18, 1977 and from November 12-16, 1979 has been published in book form for the Commission of the European Communities under the title AppliedThermoluminescence Dosimetry. At the third course from May 24-28, 1982, some additional topics were included in the lecture programme like thermoluminescent reader design, ultraviolet (UV) dosimetry and heavy charged particle dosimetry, dosimetric characteristics of some new sintered thermoluminescent dosimeters and thermoluminescent properties of zirconia. These contributions not treated in the Course Proceedings of the first two courses are contained in this publication.
