Abstract

The proceedings in this volume report the last contractors' coordination meeting on solar heating and cooling of the second four-year Energy R&D Programme (1979 - 1983) of the Commission of the European Communities. They therefore reflect the state-of-the-art in this field in the middle of 1983. Recommendations for test procedures for flat plate collectors have been developed and published, and those for heat stores will be published shortly. There are however as yet no generally agreed test procedures for passive solar components; such procedures are nevertheless urgently needed. Their development should be emphasized in the next programme. Finally, these proceedings reflect the fact that passive solar energy research has received greater attention in the second half of the 1979 - 1983 Energy R&D Programme. The conclusions of an assessment study which examined the potential for energy saving in passive solar applications, published as Volume 3 of this Series A of Solar Energy R & D in the European Community, justify an even greater share for passive solar energy in the next programme.
