Abstract

The principle short and long term actions concerning in particular the problems of the control of Varroa jacobsoni Oud. are briefly presented. This harmful mite, parasite of the honey bee, was recently introduced in Europe and discovered for the first time in the E.C. countries. It is rapidly spreading, infecting the majority of the countries in the Community and puts in grave danger a common patrimony of about five million beehives. The actions already undertaken by the C.E.C. are reviewed and the predisposed ad-hoc communitary programmes is illustrated. In this framework there is the awareness of the gravity of the problem and of the urgency to dispose of valid and efficacious means in a spirit of effective European collaboration.
