Abstract

An absolute calibration procedure for electron cyclotron emission spectrometers is described. It is shown that a large-area blackbody can be simulated by a two- dimensional scan of a microwave source. An equivalent temperature for the simulated blackbody is introduced. A convenient expression is derived for the calibration factor of the system, defined as the detector output voltage divided by the blackbody temperature. The frequency resolution of the spectrometer can be included in the calibration by the use of a swept source.
