COMMON CAUSE FAILURE INVESTIGATIONS USING THE EUROPEAN RELIABILITY DATA SYSTEM
The European Reliability Data System has provided data for use in investigations into common cause failures in nuclear power plant. These investigations have been made on two levels. At a system and inter-system level the investigations have used data from the licensee event record file (held within the ERDS), and at a component level the investigation used data from the component event data bank (also held within the ERDS). The difference in approach required of these two investigations is shown, and the necessity for this difference discussed. Methodologies for indication of common cause failures (at both system and component level) based on time coincidence are presented, and their validity discussed as useful tools for rapid screening of event records. The paper also briefly describes the progress of the research and principal findings.
