Abstract

In view of the energy problems facing the industrialized countries there is a need for the development of energy technology. The development depends strongly on the availability of improved constructional materials in order to promote more efficient conversion and utilisation of energy. Due to the use of high temperature and aggressive environments, ceramics and composite materials have to be considered along with steels and superalloys. This contribution describes: i) the energy problems ii) the need to develop materials iii) some specific aspects of the importance of materials science for energy technology iv) the future of materials science in an energy production context.
