Abstract

Large scale cryopump systems with a pumping speed exceeding 6x10**61s**-1 and a pumping area of 40m**2 will be installed in each of the Neutral Injector Boxes to be installed at JET. The required high pumping speed and the given space limitations made the design of a new cryopump configuration necessary. The resulting JET 'serial open structure' cryopump configuration provides approximately twice the specific pumping speed of a conventional chevron configuration without requiring more depth. For the design of this advance cryopump configuration solid angle considerations, Monte Carlo calculations and light simulation measurements have been carried out. The performance data of the configuration have been confirmed by tests on model cryopumps which also included tests in the presence of a high energetic particle beam.
