Abstract

In the first numerical round robin on EPFM organized in 1980 by the European Group on Fracture, 18 contributions analyzed a three point bend geometry. The disturbingly large scatter observed for large plastic deformations prompted a second numerical round robin which started in 1982. After a first phase in which two simple academic problems were analyzed, the second phase regarding a CT specimen started. The geometry and the material tensile curve were taken from an EGF experimental round robin. 22 participants sent 43 solutions to this problem, including plane strain, plane stress and 3D solutions. The scatter of the ""best solution"" is very large, only four 3D solutions predicted correctly the experimental results. This report presents the different numerical methods for calculating the elastic-plastic response, J and COD and compares the solutions. The EGF round robin activity will continue with further investigations.
