Abstract

Analytical expressions are given for the determination of the 240-Pu equivalent spontaneous fission neutron emission rate applying the shift register technique. Two interpretation models are presented to correct the correlated neutron counts for induced fission events. One method uses a standard and the ratio (alpha-n)-reaction rate to spontaneous fission neutron emission rate of the test item, the other a neutron transport code to assess the probability that a neutron generates an induced fission event. For the evaluation of the fission cascades two approaches are used. All models are applied to experimental data obtained with PuO-2 samples of different composition and size.
