EXTRACTION DU COBALT DES ACIERS INOXYDABLES.
The dismantling of nuclear power plants poses the problem of separating cobalt (a highly radioactive element) from stainless steel. This study set out to explore two lines of research: the application of the ESR (electroslag refining) process and controlled oxidation with slag present. The ESR process was abandoned because the first laboratory tests showed that the solubility of phosphides of cobalt (compounds more stable than the phosphides of iron or nickel) in the slag was too weak to be of any interest. The second experiment, namely to melt the stainless steel with the slag under controlled oxidation, produced results which were no more satisfying, this time because chemical reaction rates were too weak. Nevertheless it is on the basis of this second process that a pilot study of an industrial waste treatment plant has been carried out.
