Abstract

A simple performance diagram is presented which may be of use to those working on the development of low emissivity or semi-reflecting films for windows. The diagram displays the heat gain (or loss) of a 1 m**2 window, during the heating season, as a function of both U-value and solar transmission. It can be constructed for any climatic region provided radiation and temperature data are available. The examples presented here use Test Reference Year data for three widely separated European locations. The diagram can be used to give an immediate assessment of the performance of a particular window in the chosen location and also to estimate the improvement to be gained from a change in U-value or solar transmission. In the application of heat reflecting films to windows an improvement in U-value is often achieved at the expense of some loss in solar transmission. The diagram is therefore particularly useful for illustrating these effects.
