PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ENERGY PILOT PROJECTS. INFORMATIVE SLIDES AND PICTURES PACKAGE
At the beginning of 1980, the Commission launched a call for tenders for photovoltaic pilot projects in the 30 to 300 kW range. After a selection procedure 15 projects with a total power of 1 MW were started in 1981. Total budget of all 15 projects was approximately 22 million ECU. One third of this cost was borne by the Commission in the frame of the European Community's 2nd Energy R&D Programme (1979 - 1983). The rest of the budget was contributed by the Member Countries and other institutions. It is important to note that all projects were also heavily cofunded by the industry itself; in some cases as high as 50 %. Plants are generally unattended as they need no maintenance. All plants employ the same standard monitoring system. Raw data are transmitted for exploitation to Ispra acting as the Commission's monitoring centre for this programme. The photovoltaic modules employed in this programme are representative of the state of the art in the field. Modules were supplied by AEG and Siemens from Germany, France Photon and Photowatt from France, Pragma and Ansaldo from Italy, BP Solar from England and IDE/Fabricable from Belgium. Modules were qualified by the Commission's Joint Research Centre at Ispra in a special test campaign. The slides package and the pictures series constitute, for the first time, a visual summary of all 15 Photovoltaic Solar Energy Pilot Projects, cofinanced and built under the leadership of the Commission of the European Communities.
