TRACE METAL POLLUTION RESEARCH AT THE JRC-ISPRA
The programme of action of the European Communities on the environment foresees the preparation of criteria documents on trace elements which includes the evaluation of the risk to human health and to the environment drawing up quality objectives and environmental quality standards. Although the setting of exposure limits and legal standards of environmental quality involves decisions of a political nature the determination of health criteria for trace elements is essentially a scientific task which requires integrated multidisciplinary research. In this context, the research project Trace Metal Pollution, Protection of the Environment Programme, at the JRC Ispra of the EC is aimed at assessing the potential environmental and health impact of trace metals from different pollution sources. This paper presents the general lines and the objectives of the Trace Metal Pollution project showing a few selected results in the different areas of the research.
