THE CERTIFICATION OF A FIRST SERIES OF FIVE HYDROCARBON MATERIALS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF EQUILIBRIUM FLASHPOINT (TEMPERATURE RANGE 15 TO 65 DEGREES C)
The closed cup flashpoints of five pure hydrocarbon materials (n-octane, p-xylene, n-nonane, n-decane and n- undecane) have been determined by equilibrium methods in an interlaboratory exercise, involving 11 laboratories of the European Community member countries and one laboratory of the Commission of the European Communities. The methods used were based on IP303/74 for ASTM D3278-73 (Rapid Tester) and IP304/74 (Abel, Abel-Pensky, Pensky-Martens Cups). For each hydrocarbon material, the numbers of individual measurements accepted have been between 106 and 124. As a result, the closed cup flashpoints of these materials by an equilibrium method are certified at the following temperatures: - n-Octane +14.O degrees C (Uncertainty = +- 0.5 degrees C) - p-Xylene +26.O degrees C (Uncertainty = +- 0.5 degrees C) - n-Nonane +32.O degrees C (Uncertainty = +- 0.5 degrees C) - n-Decane +49.O degrees C (Uncertainty = +- 0.5 degrees C) - n-Undecane +63.O degrees C (Uncertainty = +- 0.5 degrees C) This report describes the experimental details of the interlaboratory measurements and certification procedure. The procedure required extensions to be made to methods IP303/74 and IP304/74 which are given in detail and recommendations are made for improvement of these methods over the temperature range covered by the flashpoint reference materials.
