Abstract

The report deals with theory and practice of active audiomagnetotellurics. The following points are described. - a new field unit - model calculations for the magnetic fields - results and interpretation The measuring unit consists of a receiving station and a transmitter at a distance of 2-10 km. Here 10 Amp. A.C. current with a frequency of between 0.01 and 2500 Hz is fed into the earth through a 300 m long dipole. The receiving unit registers the artificially induced electromagnetic fields. The value and phase of electrical field strength as well as the magnetic field density are measured, from which the specific resistance and its phases are calculated. The model calculations deal with the electric and magnetic field of an electrical dipole over a halfspace with three layers. They are based on the theory of Sommerfield, that is transformed into relations that allow numerical calculation. The models were used for the interpretation of the measured data that were collected in the geothermal area of Travale-Radicondoli (Toscana). The measurements were in agreement with the theory and with the findings of other authors.
