OCEAN TRANSPORTATION OF COAL IN A SLURRY FORM - REQUIREMENTS, PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES
Slurry technologies are providing today a reliable and economical mean of transporting coal from mines to utilities. This applies not only to overland pipeline in a particular country, but is also very promising as far as world trade is concerned and ocean transportation is involved. The present paper highlights the problems posed by coal slurries in the field of ocean ship design and operation. The analysis takes into consideration both conventional and dense phase mixtures and deals also with mixtures with other than water carrier fluid. A thorough investigation will be presented for ocean slurry vessels. Finally, as an application, the case of stated slurry trades on specific routes will be considered, along with an economic assessment.
