SEPARATION OF DROPLET AND SOLID PARTICLE AEROSOLS IN A DEEP BED PACKED GLASS FIBRE SEPARATOR
In the tests performed the packed fiber mist eliminator which is cleanable and intended for use in the off-gases of reprocessing plants proved to be a high efficiency roughing filter protecting subsequent HEPA filters. Thanks to the cleanability of the glass fiber package long service lives are attained before a remotely handled replacement becomes necessary. Due to the high retention factors for droplets and solid particles the service life of downstream HEPA filters is increased by at least a factor 10. Experiments performed in the prototype PASSAT dissolver off-gas filter section resulted in an optimum thickness of the filter layers of 50 mm and a density of packing 300 kg/m**3 for low differential pressures of 13.2 mbar and volumetric flow rates of 150 mn3/h. A sufficiently regular loading extending, inter alia, the service life of a mist eliminator was detected on the surface available for removal.
