Abstract

The fabrication of the JET vacuum vessel octants is described and the experience gained by producing a full size prototype octant made from identical materials to the production octants which were manufactured subsequently is indicated. The paper also deals with the particular aspects and problems met during the manufacture of the rigid sectors. The report also presents the method used for assembling the octants and the thorough inspections and tests applied during the fabrication. The dimensional surveys carried out on the octants after their baking at 525 degrees C showed that the critical assembly dimensions have been achieved with great success and the achievement of the nominal specified mean tokamak radius has presented no serious problems.
