Abstract

An automated, microprocessor based instrument for Uranium enrichment measurements to be performed during Safeguards Inspections is presented. The system is built around a modular (NIM) SILENA multichannel analyzer with 1024, 2048 or 4096 channels. The MCA is interfaced with a microprocessor Basic Unit. The enrichment meter function is housed in a dedicated plug-in unit which is linked to the microprocessor Basic Unit. Two different measurement procedures are implemented in the system according to the gamma ray detector used : Ge or NaI. The computing algorithms used by the system are explained. The paper also presents the results of measurements performed on different samples using the same Ge detector and the same geometry, but different measurement times and two different MCA's : + the automated system (SILENA NIM Standard 2048 Channels MCA) with a step function background determination + a laboratory system (SILENA CICERO 8192 Channels MCA) with a linear background determination. The investigated samples were U-3O-8 ESARDA standards.
