THE ENERGY STRAGGLING OF PROTONS IN THIN CARBON FOILS
This work describes the measurement of the energy straggling of protons in the energy range 50-150 KeV, passing through a thin carbon foil of a surface density ranging from 3 to 6 mug/cm**2. The results were found to be in agreement with the theoretical model of Lindhard and Scharff. The composition of the carbon foils was established by means of a Rutherford-backscatter technique, using 2 MeV He**-x ions. This procedure yielded a carbon content of about 96 %.
