HOMEOSTASIS IN A FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENT ARTIFICIALLY ACIDIFIED
This research has been carried out to evaluate the effects of acidification on phyto- and zooplankton community of an eutrophic shallow take rich in carbonate: Lake Comabbio (Province of Varese, Northern Italy). The experiment has been performed in 4 plastic enclosures (1 m diameter, 3 m height): 2 acidified with H-2SO-4 and 2 kept as control. Soon after the acidification the values of pH, alkalinity and chlorophyll concentration decreased whereas those of transparency, conductivity, hardness, N-NH-3 and P-PO-4 increased. Population density of the phyto- and zooplankton decreased. Successively, a partial recovery of the physical, chemical and biological characteristics was evident, except for the phytoplankton structure which was modified by the decrease of Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta. The recovery was overall due to the buffered capacity of the sediment. Results obtained with a laboratory experiment confirmed the conclusions drawn from the enclosure studies."
