Abstract

Ecotoxicology (or toxicology of ecosystems) is a new branch of applied ecology and concerns the studies on the polluted environment by toxic substances. The field of ecotoxicology is interdisciplinary, wide and complex. The transfer of the pollutants along the food chains and the pollutant effects produced at population and community level are among the fundamental topics of ecotoxicology. Studies on the polluted environments, their recovery, the biological reactions to toxic substances and the research on the manipulation of the natural and artificial ecosystems produce a great deal of useful information for a better understanding of the structure and functioning of the ecosystem. As a consequence, the ecotoxicological research produces results useful for quantitative ecology."
