CONCEPT AND REALIZATION OF A QUERY INTERFACE FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIAL DATA BANK
The JRC High Temperature Materials Data Bank (D.B.) is a highly specialised D.B. containing test reports on high temperature alloys properties. The data structure for a complete description of a test report to satisfy the requirements of a specialist user consists of more than 250 data items organized in five files. For the on-line access to this bank a query system has been implemented which allows easy but also comprehensive access to the data. According to the level of acquaintance the users have on the query system and on the D.B. structure, the system operates in three different ways: 1) It provides in conversational mode a versatile and intelligent guidance in order to formulate properly the queries. 2) It looks in a query dictionary in order to select the appropriate query for its execution. An adequate help is also provided for this purpose. 3) It provides specialist users with a powerful language of command in order to operate without any tutorial assistance to formulate their own questions. The language mentioned in pont 3) is based on the syntax of the common command language as recommended by the Commission of the European Communities for access to the data bases connected to EURONET.
