Abstract

Conversion factors between exposure or air kerma and the depth dose equivalent in 1000 mg/cm**2 depth in the ICRU sphere show an energy dependence similar in shape to that of many commercial dosimeters calibrated in units of exposure. Therefore, the radiation characteristics of a number of currently available instruments which fulfill present requirements on the energy dependence of response has been investigated to establish whether and how far these instruments could be modified to indicate directly the new depth dose equivalent quantities. For the example of a commercial Geiger-Mueller counter a method is presented allowing the tailoring of a nearly energy independent response with respect to depth dose equivalent over a wide range of photon energies.
