DEVELOPMENT OF A DENSITY FLUCTUATION DIAGNOSTIC FOR THE TCA TOKAMAK BASED ON THE PHASE CONTRAST TECHNIQUE
A phase contrast apparatus using a 20 cm diameter CO-2 CW laser beam designed for the observation of a broad spectrum of density fluctuations in TCA is nearing completion. The instrument produces an image of the plasma that is probed by a photovoltaic detector and reveals small relative phase shifts. It has been experimentally shown to be equivalent in performance to an interferometer for wavelengths ranging from less than 2 mm to more than 10 cm, with the advantage of being compact, lightweight and less sensitive to mechanical perturbations.
