PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM A FIR THOMSON SCATTERING DIAGNOSTIC ON TCA
An optically pumped D-2O laser at 385 mum and a 20 channel heterodyne detection system with a Schottky diode receiver and a CD-3C1 local oscillator have been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of an ion temperature measurement in a tokamak plasma by collective Thomson scattering of FIR radiation. The present system is not capable of allowing us to determine the ion temperature with reasonable precision (+- 20 %) in one shot. It should, however, provide a proof of principle. During preliminary experiments radiation scattered from impurity ions has been observed.
