Abstract

A finite-element method has been developed to investigate the interaction between the fast magneto- acoustic wave and a slow wave for ion cyclotron resonance heating. Two heating scenarios in the case of low field side excitation are investigated: Fundamental cyclotron heating of a species with a lower charge to mass ratio than the main species and second harmonic heating. The dependence of absorbed power on k-z and the plasma parameters is discussed in light of the mode structure of the fast wave.
