SCREENING AND MANAGEMENT OF POTENTIALLY TREATABLE GENETIC METABOLIC DISORDERS
This volume contains the papers delivered at a Workshop on Recent Advances in Screening and Management of Potentially Treatable Genetic Disorders held under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities in London in March 1983 to consider such possibilities. The topics for discussion were selected mainly to highlight recent discoveries which might be exploited by concerted approaches between different centres, especially when the immediate benefits were restricted to only a few centres. The Workshop considered how appropriate screening could be made available in order to identify disorders needing early treatment to prevent brain damage, or to identify "at risk" families where genetic counselling and possible prenatal diagnosis of such disorders could be offered. In other cases early diagnosis would enable parents to prevent exposure to substances which are known to precipitate haemolytic episodes and to successfully manage the treatment of many other metabolic disorders, either by means of diet or more radical methods.
