COMPARISON OF SODIUM AEROSOL CODES
Different codes describing the behaviour of sodium aerosols are compared. Each code is reviewed with regard to physical modelling and numerical treatment. The codes considered are: AEROSIM (UK), MAEROS (USA), HAARM-3 (USA), AEROSOLS/A2 (F), AEROSOLS/B1 (F) and PARDISEKO-IIIb (D). The code review was complemented by benchmark calculations for a typical fast breeder case. Besides a reference case sensitivity calculations were undertaken for the more important input parameters, such as the agglomerate shape factors, the collision efficiency for gravitational and turbulant coagulation, the characteristics of the aerosol source (mass medium radius, geometrical standard deviation) and the turbulent energy density dissipation rate. These calculations were performed with the codes: ABC/INTG (Japan), AEROSIM (UK), AEROSOL/A2 (F), AEROSOL/B1 (F), and PARDISEKO-IIIb (D). The results of the study are a critical evaluation of the assumptions made in the different codes and recommendations for their further development. From the benchmark calculations those input parameters were identified which influence predominantly the aerosol mass release into the atmosphere resulting from the inherent leak rate of the secondary containment.
