Abstract

For an experimental investigation of dose equivalent quantities a material is required which approaches the properties of the tissue equivalent material as proposed by the ICRU as far as possible. With the aid of the backscatter factor for X-rays the material equivalence in view of the skin dose equivalent in a depth of 7 mg/cm**2 was examined experimentally and by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Water and a paraffin type substance named M3 revealed properties close to that of the hypothetic ICRU mixture. Furthermore the energy dependence of a conversion factor is presented which allows a transformation of results in air kerma into tissue kerma.
