  • ELECTROCHEMICAL KINETICS OF THE HIGH TEMPERATURE SPLITTING OF STEAM - THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE CE0-(2-X) - YTTRIA STABILIZED ZIRCONIA CATHODIC INTERFACE.

Abstract

The cathodic reduction of the water molecule at high temperature at the interface of a CeO-(2-x) base, Double Layer Electrode with Yttria Stabilized Zirconia has been investigated. Two different rate determining processes are involved depending on the current density. In the low current density range a Tafel's type Kinetic behaviour was found, with an activation free enthalpy around 22 Kcal/mole. The rate determining process has been identified in the transport of the oxygen atoms through the CeO-(2-x) layer. At high currents a lack of any apparent additional, non-ohmic contribution to the total overvoltage has been put into evidence. The interposition of a separate CeO-(2-x) layer between porous platinum and YSZ resulted in a worsening of the electrochemical kinetic behaviour also with respect to the Pt/cerium undoped YSZ interfaces.
