REMOTE SENSING - THE JOLIBA PROJECT IN WEST AFRICA
The Joint Research Centre of the European Communities at Ispra (Italy) has been operating for four years in an applied research project in West Africa (Mali, Guinea). The project is concerned with the setting up of methods for rice culture inventory using the new technology of remote sensing. Owing to its intimate link with the Niger River, the research project is called JOLIBA, from the Bambara name of the river, meaning river of blood (or of life).
