RADIATION PROTECTION OF THE PUBLIC IN RESPECT OF CONSUMER GOODS CONTAINING RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES
The use of consumer goods containing radioactive substances makes a contribution to the total exposure to ionizing radiation to which mankind is subjected. This publication, which has been worked out by the Commission with the aid of a group of experts in radiation protection, represents a practical guide for the health authorities of the Member States who are responsible for authorizing the production, marketing and use of consumer goods containing radioactive substances. It contains detailed information in connection with the provisions of Articles 3, 4 and 5 of the Council Directive of 15 July 1980 amending the directives laying down the basic safety standards for the health protection of the general public and workers against the dangers of ionizing radiation, which provide for derogations from the general system of prior authorization. In addition, the document contains general criteria for control and authorization and describes a testing programme and its methods.
