A DISCUSSION OF STRESS RATES AND THEIR APPLICATION IN FINITE STRAIN PLASTICITY
An illustration is provided of the difficulties encountered in classical Cauchy rate type forms of elasto-plasticity as currently used in hydrocodes.Simple elastic shear test results for two popular approaches, Jaumann stress rate and rotated Cauchy stress are critically examined on the basis of a proposed reference solution. An alternative approach using stress definitions in a convected frame is introduced. The close physical connection between convective derivatives and the dragging along process of memorized quantities is illustrated. A numerical example demonstrates the potential of the method.
